| These are the questions we hear most frequently from readers about the new Patriot-News: Q. Why did you change the paper? A. The ways that we get news and information have changed over the past decade. Many readers get news all day over the Internet, plus cable TV news and radio. We know we have to keep up with this changing landscape, so we decided to ask readers what they wanted in a newspaper today. What do you already know when you pick up your paper in the morning? What sorts of information would you find most useful in print? We used those answers to create the new Patriot-News, designed for the way you use a print newspaper in the digital age. We spent months talking to randomly selected readers and non-readers in small groups, large groups and through phone surveys. We showed them different options for how to present the news and we used their feedback to shape the paper you will see starting April 20th. Q. What did readers tell you they wanted? A. There were lots of great ideas but readers consistently told us they wanted these things above all:
A. No, the type is the exact same. We changed the look of some of the headlines but that’s all. Q. Is there less news? Is the paper smaller? A. No. While we moved some things around, we did not change the overall number of pages or reduce the amount of news in the paper. Actually, there are more stories than before. There are more short stories that summarize what was in the news yesterday (including what appeared on our affiliate web site, Pennlive.com). And there are more in-depth stories that take you “behind the headlines” to explore both local and national issues. Q. What’s the point of the Patriot-News Express? I’m not used to seeing a sheet of news wrapped around the front page of the paper. A. Many readers told us that they don’t always have time for the paper in the morning. They asked if we could offer a quick summary of the news to glance at quickly over breakfast or during a coffee break – then they could look at the rest of the paper later, when they had time. That’s the purpose of the Patriot-News Express. You can just pull it off and go- and still get the information you want most. Q. Did you take news pages away to create the Express? A. No, we added the Express page to the paper. We did not take anything away from the rest of the paper to create the Express. Q. Why did you move the Local & State news up front? A. The overwhelming majority of our readers say that they read The Patriot-News, first and foremost, for local news. Putting local news first allows us to give it more prominence and, when necessary, more space. Q. Will obituaries always be in the same place, like they were before? A. Yes, the Obituaries section will always be at the end of our Local & State pages, just before the first Nation & World page. Q. What happened to the Business section? A. All of our business news is still here – and more. Each Monday, our new Midstate Money pages will feature profiles of local businesses, the latest news from local companies, and interviews with local business leaders. Tuesday through Saturday, our Money pages will bring you the top national and world financial news, plus breaking news from local businesses. On Sundays, our Your Money section will focus on personal finance with practical advice from local and national experts plus, as always, the Wall Street Journal Sunday pages. Q. I see that you changed Life into Your Life. Will you still have columnists such as Sue Gleiter and George Weigel? A. Absolutely. Your Life is all about useful information to help you navigate your life in central PA. You will still find Sue’s Word of Mouth column on Wednesdays and George Weigel’s Over the Garden Fence on Thursdays, along with Roger Quigley’s Bagging Bargains on Saturdays. You will also find features such as Things to Do Today, a daily What’s for Dinner? recipe and a Question of the Day. |
